AT&T delivered mixed first quarter financial results on Tuesday, with revenues falling below market expectations.

The deal for Time Warner - owner of CNN, TNT, HBO and the Warner Bros. film and TV studio, among other things - is seen helping AT&T potentially find new areas of growth as its core wireless business has become saturated and its share of the mobile market leaves little room for acquisitions.

AT&T did not disclose updated sub numbers for DirecTV Now, the OTT TV service it launched last November, but noted that DirecTV Now gains helped to offset its decline in linear TV subscribers.

AT&T Makes Some Headway Meeting Earnings Estimates

Revenue from consumer mobility customers totaled $7.7 billion, down 7.1 percent versus the year-earlier quarter, reflecting fewer phone sales and upgrades, and lower postpaid service revenues mostly due to migrations to business plans.

In the U.S., AT&T lost 348,000 mainstream wireless phone customers, marking a return to the large losses characteristic of the past two years after an easing in the previous period. The company also said that customers are holding on to their phones longer, pressuring equipment sales. Free cash flow - cash from operating activities minus capital expenditures - was $3.2 billion for the quarter.

The company reported adjusted earnings of 74 cents a share on revenues of $39.4 billion.

Authorities say 5 dead in New York City fire
A neighbor told the New York Post that she saw a baby who was very badly burned being carried from the home. The fire also spread to an adjacent home - that home was damaged, but no one was home at the time.

The stock, though, reacted favorably to Tuesday's earnings report, rising 1 percent in after-hours trading to $40.18.

Looking forward to full year 2017, AT&T continues to expect adjusted earnings growth in the mid-single digit range. AT&T also said it had 1.8 million connected devices on the 2G network it shut down in January; those 2G customers were removed from the company's subscriber count at the beginning of the year. However, the company said it is "no longer providing consolidated revenue guidance primarily due to the unpredictability of wireless handset sales".
