Amazon to create permanent shelter for homeless families on its Seattle campus

"We are lucky to count them as neighbors and thrilled to offer them a permanent home within our downtown Seattle headquarters".

The nonprofit now operates a shelter in an old Travelodge near the core of Amazon's new downtown campus, a place where those who find themselves without a roof in an increasingly expensive city can get back on their feet, while staffers help them find jobs and housing.

Next City's Jen Kinney reported on Seattle's homelessness crisis and possible solutions in 2016, writing, "Seattle has embraced Housing First, and boasts several innovative and successful models". The motel was on a chunk of downtown property in Seattle where Amazon planned to eventually erect yet another set of sparkling buildings to meet its insatiable need for office space in this city, where it has come to embody both the region's economic boom and its struggles with affordability.

Hartman saying of Amazon's commitment, "These families will be stable, and we know, we'll be able to serve more and more families in that building over time".

The new shelter will include a resource center with some 40 nonprofits and volunteers to provide services and work with families to help them secure permanent housing and employment. It will take up about half of an 8-story building being built on a block where Amazon is also constructing a 23-story office building. If you'd like to get involved, but don't live anywhere near Seattle, check out the nonprofit's online wish list where you can donate items to the shelter via-you guessed it-Amazon.

Amazon said it expected to spend "tens of millions of dollars" on the design and construction of the shelter, slated to open in 2020.

Alan Durning of Sightline Institute, a nonprofit research organization, told the New York Times: 'Its reputation in Seattle has certainly suffered.

INTERNATIONAL: Prince Philip to step away from public duties
It is likely that the monarch will be accompanied by younger members of the royal family on future engagements. He said: "He has dedicated his life to supporting the Queen and our country with a clear sense of public duty".
