Turkey to US: Reverse plan to arm Syrian Kurds fighting ISIS

Officials criticise Trump's decision to arm YPG units in battle for Raqqa against ISIL as U.S. tries to reassure Ankara.

The spokesman for the Kurdish militia that forms the backbone of the fighting force known as the People's Protection Units, or YPG, told The Associated Press on Thursday that his group will seek "neighborly relations" with Turkey.

Ankara says the YPG is an extension of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), designated a terrorist group by the US.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Wednesday that he hoped the decision will be changed by the time he visits Washington for talks with Trump next week.

"We hope the United States administration will put a stop to this wrong and turn back from it".

It remains to be seen what shadow the issue will cast over the talks between Trump and Erdogan, which have been touted as chance to forge a new partnership between the two North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies.

A USA official told Reuters that the United States was looking to boost intelligence cooperation with Turkey to support its fight against the PKK.

Every weapon obtained by the Syrian Kurdish YPG fighters constitutes a threat to Turkey, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said, reiterating Ankara's opposition to the U.S. deal to arm the Kurdish fighters.

The U.N. has warned damage to the Tabqa dam - Syria's largest - could lead to massive flooding, and a source who works with the dam's technicians said they had fled the structure as fighting drew near in recent days. "It's Europe's southern border, and we'll stay closely connected", Mattis told reporters during a visit to the Pabrade Training Area in Lithuania on Wednesday.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Wednesday he hoped Washington would "reverse" its decision to arm a Syrian offshoot of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) before his visit to the USA next week. He and other officials have said the USA will closely monitor the weapons' distribution and insure that they are used only against IS.

Every single one of these weapons that will be provided to our partner forces will be accounted for and pointed at #ISIS.

"We are lucky to count them as neighbors and thrilled to offer them a permanent home within our downtown Seattle headquarters".

The US decision has been however welcomed on the Syrian Kurdish side.

The BBC's Mark Lowen in Istanbul says the USA decision is a huge slap in the face of its ally, which has consistently said arming the Kurds would be its "red line".

Washington is eager to retake Raqqa, arguing that it is a haven for IS operatives to plan attacks on the West.

"We believe that from now on and after this historic decision, [the YPG] will play a stronger, more influential and more decisive role in combating terrorism at a fast pace", Redur Xelil, YPG spokesperson, said in a written statement.

The Arab-Kurdish alliance accepted IS's surrender to protect civilians and the dam, it said, adding "the coalition tracked fleeing fighters and targeted those that could be safely hit".
