European leader blasts Trump on climate withdrawal

A White House official says President Donald Trump is expected to withdraw the United States from the Paris climate accord.

A USA pullout would be disappointing but the European Union stands ready to take global leadership on the issue, European Commission Vice President Maros Sefcovic said in Brussels.

The possibility Mr Trump - who has previously described climate change as a hoax by the Chinese - could pull out within days was labelled disastrous and as putting the U.S. on "the wrong side of history" in some quarters.

Trump has not yet made an official decision to withdraw from the pact, telling reporters Wednesday they will find out soon.

The Paris Agreement is essentially a roadmap for the world's titans of industry and chief polluters to wean themselves off fossil fuels and onto renewables in order to mitigate the compounding effects of climate change.

Trump is expected to announce later this week that he intends to pull out of the landmark Paris agreement.

Angela Merkel says Europe 'must take fate into its own hands'
Were Merkel to signal a German pivot away from the US , she would hardly choose a Bavarian beer party as the venue. Rapturous applause greeted her fiery calls for Europeans to fight for their own destiny.

"We will continue to lobby the Americans and the White House to show the leadership they have shown in the past on reducing CO2", he said. Franken was one of 10 Democratic senators who traveled to Paris for the final negotiations and to show support for the agreement.

A United States withdrawal would come fewer than 18 months after the historic 196-nation pact was signed in the French capital, the fruit of a hard-fought agreement between Beijing and Washington under Barack Obama's leadership. Unlike the Paris agreement, the UNFCCC is a Senate-approved treaty, so senators would probably want to have a say in such a move.

So far, 147 parties representing more than 82 per cent of greenhouse gas emissions have ratified the agreement.

Trump tweeted late Wednesday that he would announce his decision at 3 p.m. ET in the White House Rose Garden, ending his message "MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!".

One unnamed official told the Associated Press there may be "caveats" in Trump's language withdrawing from the deal.

The Trump administration may choose to exit the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

Youthful Man United side beats Palace 2-0 in last EPL game
The former England boss was, though, keen after the match to hail the club's "big achievement" in getting out of trouble. And not for its famous manager, whose first year at United would be widely viewed as a failure.

"I obviously don't know whether he's made it", Spicer said during a Wednesday afternoon briefing.

Under Mr Obama, Washington had pledged to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 26-28 per cent below 2005 levels by 2025.

In a speech on Tuesday at an event in New York, Mr Guterres said, "It's very clear that governments are not everything".

"But even if the government decides to leave the Paris agreement, it's very important for U.S. society as a whole - the cities, the states, the companies, the businesses - to remain engaged", he said.

Elon Musk's strained relationship with U.S. president Donald Trump may be nearing the breaking point. Senior adviser Steve Bannon, who wants Trump to focus on actions that will rev up his conservative political base, has long opposed it. Jared Kushner, Trump's son-in-law and top adviser, has come to the view that the standards set out in the agreement did not work for the U.S. economy and the question was whether to try to change those standards within the agreement or pull out, another senior administration official said.

US officials reportedly were concerned about the heat upon the president's arrival and asked for an abbreviated welcome ceremony. The area is home to sensitive religious sites, including the Western Wall , the holiest place where Jews can pray.
