Qatar sanctions aim to cut support to extremism: UAE

Barely an hour later, Mr Trump accused Qatar of being a "funder of terror at a very high level" and demanded that the tiny, oil-rich nation cut off that money flow to rejoin the circle of responsible nations.

"Do we take the easy road or do we take a hard but necessary action?" he said.

"We are of the view that all parties should resolve their differences through a process of constructive dialogue and peaceful negotiations based on well-established worldwide principles of mutual respect, sovereignty and non interference in the internal affairs of other countries", it added.

The president of Turkey has called for a resolution to the dispute between Qatar and other Arab and Gulf states by the end of Ramadan.

Qatar foreign minister rejects intervention in foreign policy
Turkey's parliament on Wednesday ratified two deals on deploying troops in Qatar and training the nation's gendarmerie force. The emirate is also home to leaders of Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood, the Palestinian Hamas and the Afghan Taliban.

After Mr Trump's remarks, the Pentagon reiterated its position that Qatar was a key USA military partner, saying "the evolving situation is hindering our ability to plan for longer-term military operations". "We have to stop the funding of terrorism". Qatar, for its part, has strenuously denied accusations that it is a supporter of terrorism, describing the moves to diplomatically isolate it as "unjustified".

On Monday, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and Bahrain led a string of countries that cut ties with Qatar over what they say is the emirate's financing of extremist groups and its ties to Iran, Saudi Arabia's regional arch-rival.

After meetings with Mr Trump and his top national security officials, Rex Tillerson called for de-escalation and dialogue, and said the crisis was "hindering U.S. military action in the region, and the campaign against ISIL".

In a sharp contrast to Trump's tone and messaging, Tillerson called on Gulf nations to de-escalate the crisis with Qatar, citing humanitarian, economic and military costs.

Saudi Arabia said an immediate change of policy by Qatar was essential.

Their approval came as Washington joined intensifying global efforts to heal the rift between the key Western Gulf allies, which has escalated into the region's worst diplomatic crisis in years. Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Bahrain are all in the GCC.

The United Arab Emirates welcomed "President Trump´s leadership in challenging Qatar´s troubling support for extremism". Bahrain also said Qatar needed to "correct its policies" and fight terrorism.
