Russia says Trump is using 'Cold War rhetoric' on Cuba

Trump cast that as a sign the US still wanted to engage with Cuba in hopes of forging "a much stronger and better path". Last week, the US Senate voted overwhelmingly to back new sanctions on Russian Federation.

Trump said: "I am cancelling the last administration's completely one-sided deal with Cuba".

"The government of Cuba denounces the new measures toughening the embargo" imposed since 1962, according to a statement read on state television yesterday. Hard-line exiles agreed with Trump's move to roll back some of the changes by restricting commerce with entities linked to Cuba's military, restoring tougher travel rules and other moves in hopes of forcing Cuba toward democracy.

"When he's cutting back on travel, he's hurting us, the Cuban entrepreneurs". Among them was Jos Daniel Ferrer Garc a, head of the Cuban Patriotic Union, the largest opposition group in Cuba, who was among the dissidents Obama met past year in Cuba. But it makes some exceptions, including for air and sea travel, according to USA officials.

"Further U.S. disengagement opens up opportunities for countries like Iran, Russia, North Korea and China to gain influence on an island 90 miles off our coast", Crawford said.

"The Cuban regime will always find an excuse to blame the USA government", she said.

USA visitors may face more questioning from authorities when they return home from Cuba.

Poll shows most doubt Trump's respect for institutions
Respondents were first selected randomly using address-based sampling methods, and later interviewed online or by phone. Seventy-five percent of Americans disapprove of the job Congress is doing, the poll shows.

During a speech Friday in Miami, Trump portrayed his updated policy as the fulfillment of a campaign promise to reverse Obama's diplomatic rapprochement with Cuba after decades of estrangement.

"We will not be silent in the face of communist oppression any longer", Trump said at the Manuel Artime Theater, named for a former supporter of Fidel Castro who became a leader of Brigade 2506, the land forces that spearheaded the USA -led Bay of Pigs invasion in 1961. Americans will still be able to bring Cuban cigars home, too. Before, the United States always voted against the U.N. resolution.

Obama traveled to Havana last March to solidify a detente between the U.S. and Cuba that his administration negotiated in 2014.

Cuban President Raul Castro, responding to Trump's announcement, said: "Any strategy aimed at changing the political, economic and social system in Cuba, whether it seeks to achieve it through pressures and impositions, or by employing subtle methods, will be doomed to failure".

Trump's new executive action, however, will not lift sanctions against Cuba until it released all political prisoners and respected the Cuban people's right to freedom of assembly and expression.

"It doesn't make any sense", Lee said.

Castro also said that "the USA is not in a position to give us lessons". The Cuban government, which has made clear it will not be pressured into reforms, had no immediate comment.

John Avildsen, Oscar-winning director of 'Rocky,' dead at 81
The three Oscar nominations for " Save the Tiger " and the win for Lemmon secured Avildsen's place on the list of go-to directors. Avildsen's other films included the critically hailed drama-thriller " Joe " (1970), starring Susan Sarandon and Peter Boyle.

The venue is named after a leader of the failed US-backed Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba in 1961 against Fidel Castro's revolutionary government.

What did Trump say about it?

Moreover, it appears there's a willingness to keep in place Obama's efforts to communicate with Cuba.

Mexico's foreign ministry urged the United States and Cuba to resolve their differences "via dialogue". "His speech was aggressive and threatening, ... revealing his contempt and ignorance", President Nicolas Maduro said in a speech.

Reversing course in Cuba would benefit neither Cubans nor Americans. "It is an offense against Latin America". "The stronger there, the longer it's gonna take for us to take back our country", said Eddie Ameneiro in Chicago.

American travel to Cuba has been a political battleground since the early 1990s, when the collapse of the Soviet Union left the island's communist government starved for hard currency.

That means that travelers who have already scheduled a trip to Cuba can still move ahead with their plans, as long as the new regulations have not taken effect yet.
