Despacito Stars Condemn Venezuela's Maduro Over Political Remix

"It is truly an honor that "Despacito" is now the most streamed song in history". The song's overwhelming popularity has inspired a number of remixes and parodies (this one is a particular treat), and while both artists have generally welcomed alternative versions of their song, they've recently taken a stand against one in particular: the one done by the Venezuelan government.

Justin Bieber's remix of "Despacito", by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee, propelled the infectious hit to global dominance as the most streamed track of all time: 4.6 billion plays and counting.

A remix of Despacito has figured prominently in Mr Maduro's campaign for this Sunday's vote, which will elect a "constituent assembly" to redraft the constitution over the heads of the opposition-controlled parliament.

The minister of Communication and multimedia, Salleh Said Keruak, said to AFP that its services had received numerous complaints about this song by the puerto rican Luis Fonsi, whose rate reggaeton latino is accompanied by words marked by sexual innuendo. He captioned the picture, saying: "That you illegally appropriate a song [Despacito] does not compare with the crimes you commit and have committed in Venezuela. Your dictatorial regime is a joke, not only for my Venezuelan brothers, but for the entire world", he said.

Despacito translates as "slowly", referring to the speed of the lead singer's seduction technique.

Some 100 people have died in the unrest, which has further hammered an imploding economy that is running short of food and medicine.

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro stood before the audience of his weekly "Los domingos con Maduro" (Sundays with Maduro) TV show this weekend and asked producers to turn on the music. He argues it is the only way to bring peace back to the divided nation.
