Dubai's huge 'Torch' tower engulfed in flames - again

Social media posts shows flames spreading up the Torch Tower as burning debris falls down. Video of the blaze showed one exposure of the tower nearly entirely engulfed in flames with flaming debris falling from the tower.

A large fire that ripped through a residential skyscraper "Torch Tower" in Dubai last night was brought under control.

This is the second time in two years that the Torch Tower has caught fire.

"Thanks to the efforts of the teams on the ground, the inhabitants have been evacuated from the building", said the chief of Dubai police, general Abdullah Khalifa al-Marri.

The tragic June inferno in London prompted Britain to order more thorough testing on the cladding systems of its towers. They also shared that the fire was bad and strong at about 1:00 A.M. but it started calming down after the next two hours.

"It looks very dramatic, but it is basically only going up one section of the building, so most of the building is unaffected, and therefore the escape stairs will have been unaffected".

A witness told CNN he thought the fire had engulfed 30 to 40 residences.

"Cooling operations are underway", Dubai's official media office said via Twitter.

The government said it is now working on providing shelter for those affected.

The UAE revised its building safety code in 2013 to require cladding on all new buildings over 15 meters (50 feet) tall be fire-resistant, but older buildings are exempt. The title has since been usurped by buildings in Dubai and NY.

That fire, and other recent blazes in the city, spread quickly because of external cladding, according to fire engineering consultancy Tenable Dubai.

Aletomeh, a sales manager, said he moved to the Torch Tower just three months ago, snagging an apartment on the 54th floor of the luxury tower.
