Eiffel Tower: Man attempt to kill soldier with blade

Sources told RFI that the unidentified man shouted "Allahu Akbar" - "God is great" in Arabic - during the incident.

The suspect's statements to investigators and his radical views led the anti-terrorist section of the prosecution to take over the investigation, a judicial source in Paris said on Sunday (Monday NZ Time).

The tower reopened on Sunday morning as usual at 09:00 am (0700 GMT).

The man, a Frenchman born in 1998 in Mauritania living in the Val-d'Oise (northern suburbs of Paris), was "very quickly mastered and arrested" without causing any injuries, the report said.

Dubai's huge 'Torch' tower engulfed in flames - again
Video of the blaze showed one exposure of the tower nearly entirely engulfed in flames with flaming debris falling from the tower. The tragic June inferno in London prompted Britain to order more thorough testing on the cladding systems of its towers.

According to Reuters, the suspect told police he wanted to attack a soldier and that he'd been communicating with the Islamic State, who encouraged him to go ahead with the attack.

The man was arrested and is being held for questioning, and an investigation was opened by prosecutors.

After pushing his way past a security guard at the entrance to the Eiffel Tower, the man approached soldiers patrolling at the site and, holding a blade, the source said.

No one was injured and the tower was evacuated at 11:30 p.m., about half an hour before the tower stops admitting visitors.

France has been in an official state of emergency since November 2015 when 130 people were left dead in coordinated attacks in the capital, including an assault on a rock concert in the Bataclan theatre.

Since the first wave of terror attacks in January 2015, 239 people have been killed.
