North Korean nuclear test prompts global condemnation

US President Donald Trump after attending service for Hurricane Harvey victims, at St. John's Church in Washington on Sunday.

After monitors detected a significant manmade tremor on the Korean peninsula on Sunday morning, North Korea claimed it had successfully tested a hydrogen bomb that it says can be mounted on an intercontinental ballistic missile.

The latest provocation from the isolated communist country reinforces the danger facing America, Trump had said earlier in a series of tweets, adding that "talk of appeasement" is pointless.

"They only understand one thing!" "Maybe its 20% smaller, maybe 30% larger", says James Acton, a physicist and co-director of the Nuclear Policy Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

Japan said it had concluded there was a nuclear test.

After attending church near the White House, Trump made his "We'll see" comment in response to a question from reporters. President Trump will have a lot of catching up to do, ringing North Korea with existing missile defense systems and creating new ones.

The US has joined North Korea's regional neighbours in condemning the secretive communist state's latest nuclear weapons test. Lassina Zerbo, head of the United Nations test ban treaty organization, said sanctions already imposed against North Korea aren't working. Those threats have not deterred the North's nuclear weapons program.

Apple's iPhone event is September 12 at Steve Jobs Theater
Streaming via Apple TV requires an Apple TV (2nd or 3rd generation) with software 6.2 or later or an Apple TV (4th generation). Apple today has sent out invites to select members of the press for an upcoming event at 10:00 am (PST) on September 12th.

"This new test, which follows the two tests a year ago and is the sixth since 2006, is in complete disregard of the repeated demands of the global community", he added.

Onodera said data from the Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization, which estimated the magnitude of the shaking as 5.8, suggested the bomb had a yield of around 70 kilotons.

President Trump sharply condemned North Korea's overnight nuclear test, saying Sunday morning that the action - which defied Trump's blunt warnings - were "very hostile and risky to the United States".

Trump said North Korea had become "a great threat and embarrassment to China" and that Beijing had tried but failed to solve the problem.

North Korea's first three nuclear tests from 2006 to 2013 were atomic bombs on roughly the same scale as the ones used on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, which together killed more than 200,000 people.

It came hours after Pyongyang said it had miniaturised a hydrogen bomb for use on a long-range missile, and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un was pictured with what state media said was a new type of hydrogen bomb.

Pyongyang is also yet to prove that any warhead it places on a long range-missile can survive re-entry into the earth's atmosphere after an intercontinental flight.

Bangladesh were reeling at 10-3 in the first innings when Shakib rescued them with his 155-run stand with Tamim Iqbal . Though, Taijul took the last wicket but the original hero of the victory was Shakib.

Over the past week, China's foreign ministry has repeatedly hit back at calls from Western countries and Japan for China to do more to rein in North Korea, saying that pushing for dialogue was an equally integral part of the United Nations resolutions, and that escalating sanctions alone had been evidently ineffective. David Albright, president of the Institute for Science and International Security, said it was safe to assume that the high yield of test "would likely require thermonuclear material in the device".

Then Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono said there was no doubt this was North Korea's sixth nuclear test.

Nuclear tests are crucial to perfecting sophisticated technologies and to demonstrating to the world that claims of nuclear prowess are not merely a bluff.

But experts who studied the impact of the quake caused by the explosion - measured by the US Geological Survey at magnitude 6.3 - said there was enough strong evidence to suggest the reclusive state has either developed a hydrogen bomb or was getting very close.

There was no immediate independent confirmation of the North's claim. "Even if it's the same size and weight, if it's a hydrogen bomb, its power can be tens or hundreds times bigger", Mr Chang said.

At the same time, the simple power of the blast was convincing. North Korea wants to demonstrate it knows what makes a credible nuclear warhead. "More tests now will be meaningless", Koo Kab-Woo of the University of North Korean Studies told AFP. After Pyongyang fired a ballistic missile over Japan last week, he tweeted that "talking is not the answer".

While North Korea has tested an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) that apparently brings much of the United States mainland into range, questions remain about reliability and whether it has mastered the re-entry technology to bring a warhead back through the Earth's atmosphere.

Naomi Osaka banishes memory of Keys defeat with win over Angelique Kerber
Japan's Naomi Osaka defeats defending champion No. 6 seed Angelique Kerber 6-3, 6-1 to advance to the next round of the US Open. There were questions about Osaka's health entering the US Open. "That pressure is not fun but it's what you have to go through".

If the ball is in China's court on cutting oil, it may demand more willingness from the United States to come to the negotiating table with North Korea.
