Najib, Trump meet to discuss terror fight

President Donald Trump touted what he described as a plan by Malaysia Airlines Bhd.to spend between $10 billion and $20 billion on Boeing Co. jets and General Electric Co. engines as he opened a White House meeting with Malaysia's prime minister.

Previous reports said that following the one-on-one meeting the two would be joined by U.S. vice president Mike Pence, state secretary Rex Tillerson and other senior White House leaders.

Appearing with Trump at the White House, Najib said he would like to invest in Trump's infrastructure programme and Malaysia remains committed to fighting Islamic State, Al Qaeda and other extremist groups.

At their meeting, Trump and Najib instead focused on areas of agreement, such as economic development and counterterrorism measures when they spoke during a public appearance in the Cabinet room of the White House.

That meant photographers could not take the traditional photo of the two leaders sitting side by side, but a White House official said not to read anything into the change.

Industry sources told the news agency that the announcement of the deal, worth more than US$1.8 billion (RM7.6 billion) at list prices, would be made following a meeting between Donald Trump and Najib, who is visiting the White House at the invitation of the USA president.

Trump also pointed out that Malaysia is a "massive investor in the United States in terms of stocks and bonds".

According to Trump's schedule posted on his personal Facebook page, the meeting with Najib is the fourth agenda on the USA president's list today.

Mr Najib said the 9/11 terror attacks not only changed the USA but the world as the assault was inspired by the same "false and poisonous ideology" spread by the global terror network known as the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria ― or its various acronyms ISIS, IS and Daesh.

He will also meet the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations.
