200 pilots 'call in sick', forcing airline to scrap flights

"Air Berlin is now seeing an exceptional high number of sickness reports of their pilots".

However, the pilots' union, Vereinigung Cockpit, denied the report, saying: "At no point did the VC call for (pilots) to report ill".

Air Berlin chief executive Thomas Winkelmann suggests that pilots who have absented themselves are "playing with fire".

Earlier in the day, the airline said that its pilots had filed an unusually high number of sick leaves, and it was forced to cancel flights.

Nadal battles Anderson in conflict of styles at US Open
Despite his poor career head-to-head record against the Spaniard, Anderson is determined to spoil Nadal's sweet 16 celebration. The 6ft 8in (2.03m) world number 32 Anderson will be a big underdog against Nadal, who will contest his 23rd major final.

The German government has provided the insolvent company with a credit facility of 150 million euros (179.8 million US dollars) to ensure continuity of operations until a buyer is found. "It is essential that operations be stable in order for these negotiations to go well", Winkelmann said.

"That's the only way we can secure as many jobs as possible", he added. Germany's government has backed a €150 million ($179 million) bridging loan, and talks with potential investors are under way.

The airline had long struggled for survival, and booked losses amounting to 1.2 billion euros ($1.4 billion) over the past two years.

After losing £2m per day in 2016, and seeing its financial life-support cut off when Etihad abandoned its investment in the company in April, Air Berlin is in liquidation.

Other airlines, Ryanair included, are already waiting on the outcome of the conflict in an attempt to acquire a portion of Air Berlin's most profitable routes.

With the deadline drawing close for investors to submit bids for Air Berlin, operations are facing increasing disruption.

"The fear and anger among Air Berlin staff is escalating because the future of whole families are at stake".
