N.Korea Crisis So Far No Threat to Pyeongchang Olympics — IOC

The International Olympic Committee is not considering any plan B for the Pyeongchang 2018 winter Olympics despite the escalating crisis with North Korea, IOC President Thomas Bach said yesterday.

The Pyeongchang Games, the first Winter Olympics in Asia to be staged outside Japan, will run from February 9-25.

Earlier this month North Korea launched its biggest nuclear bomb test, prompting global condemnation as US President Donald Trump said "appeasement" would not work.

But this visit is special: "President Bach will arrive to a city beginning a new Olympic celebration, because for the first time in a generation we are bringing the Games back to Los Angeles", said Garcetti.

200 pilots 'call in sick', forcing airline to scrap flights
Germany's government has backed a €150 million ($179 million) bridging loan, and talks with potential investors are under way. Air Berlin chief executive Thomas Winkelmann suggests that pilots who have absented themselves are "playing with fire".

"Speaking now about different scenarios for the Olympic winter Games would send the wrong message", he told at the opening of the IOC session in the Peruvian capital.

He said that the wording of an Olympic truce to be put before the United Nations in November - a common tradition ahead of each Olympics - was now being discussed. "No law is so ideal that it can not be broken", Bach said.

"We are also keeping the door open for the athletes of the DPRK", Bach said. "We hope we're appealing that diplomacy and peace will prevail on the Korean peninsula".

The IOC Executive Board reaffirmed that "it goes without saying that infringements from the past will also be addressed" and the IOC has already taken action against those responsible for hurting the credibility of the Olympic Games.

"We will have the Pan American Games here in two years and many people said to us, as a young Government, why are we spending money on this", he said.

The Olympic Agenda 2020 is the strategic roadmap for the future of the Olympic Movement, created to safeguard the uniqueness of the Olympic Games and strengthen the role of sport in society, with the other two pillars as "sustainability" and "youth".

"We are following the North Korean athletes taking part in qualification events".
