Nuclear powers refrain from signing United Nations treaty on banning nukes

The world's first legally-binding treaty prohibiting nuclear weapons has opened for signature at United Nations Headquarters in NY at a ceremony at which speakers from worldwide organizations, governments and civil society hailed this milestone in achieving a world free of such arsenals as well as the work that remains to be done.

That makes it hard for Tokyo to sign the treaty especially as it steps up its military role amid North Korea's missile and nuclear threats. "Therefore, there will be no change in the legal obligations on our countries with respect to nuclear weapons", the three countries said in a joint statement. Under the ban's language, it takes effect 90 days after the 50th nation ratifies it.

The signatories hope that, over time, the treaty will establish a powerful global norm against the use and possession of nuclear weapons by any state.

Ryanair to delay pilot leave as carrier battles cancellations
He dismissed talk of possible industrial action, including reported plans for a work-to-rule, saying: "There isn't a union". But a group of pilots rejected that offer on Thursday and threatened to launch a "work to rule" campaign.

Foreign Affairs Assistant Secretary Bayani Mercado of the Office of United Nations and Other International Organizations said the adoption of the treaty not only recognized the catastrophic effects of nuclear weapons on humanity and the environment but also reaffirmed the universal aspiration of a world free from such weapons.

"We commit ourselves to continuing to work for a world free of the threat of nuclear weapons". Two other major treaties are the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, introduced in 1970 and 1996 respectively. The Holy See and Thailand not only signed but also ratified it. He called the nuclear ban treaty "wishful thinking" that is "close to irresponsible".

Leaders from around the globe began adding their signatures to a treaty that bans nuclear weapons, although the world's nine nuclear-armed countries declined to sign it and denounced it as dangerously naive.
